Stellarium is a free open source planetarium for your computer. Stellarium renders 3D photo-realistic skies in real time with OpenGL. It shows a realistic sky in 3D, just like what you see with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope. Stellarium displays stars, constellations, planets, nebulas and others things like ground, landscape, atmosphere, etc. It is available for Linux/Unix, Windows and MacOSX. It is being used in planetarium projectors. Just set your coordinates and go.

Key features of "Stellarium":
· Over 120000 stars from the Hipparcos Catalogue with name and infos for the brightest ones.
· Planets and major satellites in real time (position computation now accurate enough for eclipse or transit simulation).
· Drawing of the 88 constellations with their names.
· Mythological figures of the 88 constellations.
· Textured displaying of more than 70 nebulas (Orion, M31 etc..).
· Photo-realistic Milky Way.
· Star twinkling.
· Shooting Stars.
· Skinable landscape (ground, fog, mapping of fisheye pictures).
· Ultra fast realistic atmosphere rendering (Sunsets, sunrises etc...).
· Automatic eye adaptation to sky luminance using physiologic model.
· Grids in Equatorial and Azimuthal coordinates.
· Equator and ecliptic coordinates lines.
· Smooth real time intuitive navigation.
· Powerfull zoom to see planet and nebula like in a telescope.
· Equatorial and altazimutal mount mode.
· Standard perspective and wide angle (fisheye) projections modes (e.g for planetarium dome).
· Time control (real time and accelered time modes).
· Graphical menu for simple utilisation.
· Clikable stars, planets and nebulas with informations.
· Windowed and fullscreen modes.
· Full dome (180°) projection mode for planetariums.
· Text user interface for planetariums.

Changes in Stellarium Stellarium 0.9.0 [2007-06-06] :
This new release brings a lot of new features such as a (much) larger star catalog, more landscapes, constellation culture and art, asteroids and many others.
- Larger star catalog including stars from Hiparcos, Tycho2 and NOMAD
- Can select multiple constellations at one time
- Local script directory is reread when enter TUI
- Inuit constellation art by Johan Meuris
- More sky cultures
- Large code reorganization into a modular structure based on StelModule, StelApp singleton and its "manager" classes providing services to the modules.
- Projection code cleaned and splitted into Mapping classes.
- Movement control code encapsulated into the MovementMgr module.
- Code cleaning and commenting.
- Sidereal day/week keystrokes (ALT -, ALT =, ALT [, ALT ]).
- Data files reorganized
- Added back Hawaiian translations (invented locale "hw")
- Orthographic projection, Lamberts Equal Area projection, Cylinder projection.
- Interpolate the elliptic coordinates (or the spherical coordinates in case of the moon).
- Do not place the Earth at the EMB but at its proper position.
- New orbit type comet_orbit for proper calculation of elliptic, parabolic, hyperbolic orbits.
- Added loading of jpeg textures and re-coded most of the texture manager.
- Allow loading of plug-ins (unstable until version 1.0).
- Selection of object is managed per module, and by the StelObjectManager.
- Recoded Grid display to allow for adaptative scale wrt zoom and labeling.
- The main window managed by QT4.2 instead of SDL.
- Window resizing
- Smooth go to selected solar system body by pressing control-g
- Location map updates on changing observer to new solar system body
- Titlebar updates after moving to new planet
- Landscapes may now have location, can update observer by selecting landscape
- More nebula textures and better placement of most existing textures
- Build is now managed by cmake instead of autoconf/automake. These old tools are still supported for this version.
